Ellipse: Conics Same Pair Foci Point Common Both Find

JEE Maths question with a full step-by-step solution.

Question
The conics x2a2+y2b2=1\dfrac{x^{2}}{a^{2}} + \dfrac{y^{2}}{b^{2}} = 1 and x2A2−y2B2=1\dfrac{x^{2}}{A^{2}} - \dfrac{y^{2}}{B^{2}} = 1, where a>Aa > A and a>ba > b, have the same pair of foci S1S_1 and S2S_2, and PP is a point common to both. Find the quadratic equation whose roots are S1PS_1P and S2PS_2P.
Ax2+2ax+(a2−A2)=0x^{2} + 2ax + \left(a^{2}-A^{2}\right) = 0
Bx2−2Ax+(a2+A2)=0x^{2} - 2Ax + \left(a^{2}+A^{2}\right) = 0
Cx2−2Ax+(a2−A2)=0x^{2} - 2Ax + \left(a^{2}-A^{2}\right) = 0
Dx2−2ax+(a2−A2)=0x^{2} - 2ax + \left(a^{2}-A^{2}\right) = 0correct
Solution
Step 1: PP lies on the ellipse, so
S1P+S2P=2aS_1P + S_2P = 2a
and PP lies on the hyperbola with the same two foci, so
∣S1P−S2P∣=2A\left|S_1P - S_2P\right| = 2A
Step 2: Taking S1P−S2P=2AS_1P - S_2P = 2A,
S1P=a+A,S2P=a−AS_1P = a + A, \qquad S_2P = a - A
Both are positive, as a>Aa > A. The other sign only interchanges the two lengths, so the quadratic is the same either way. Step 3:
sum=(a+A)+(a−A)=2a,product=(a+A)(a−A)=a2−A2\text{sum} = (a+A)+(a-A) = 2a, \qquad \text{product} = (a+A)(a-A) = a^{2}-A^{2}
Step 4:
x2−(sum)x+(product)=0 ⟹ x2−2ax+(a2−A2)=0x^{2} - (\text{sum})x + (\text{product}) = 0 \ \Longrightarrow\ x^{2} - 2ax + \left(a^{2}-A^{2}\right) = 0
Answer: (4).
