The 2 April 2026 evening shift was a moderate Mathematics paper with the difficulty evenly spread rather than clustered. Overall verdict

A balanced, fair paper. The hard questions were spread through the shift — a linked-quadratic problem early, a polynomial-extrema question mid-paper, and an ellipse-locus and hyperbola-area pair in the numerical section. Both easy marks (Q2 two circles, Q17 a periodic integral) were quick, and the medium band was large, so a composed student could bank a strong score by staying accurate and picking off the reachable hard problems.

Strategy in one line

Bank the 2 easy + 16 medium questions first (that alone is a strong 72/100), then attack the 7 hard ones. Q1, Q18, Q23 and Q24 were the biggest time sinks — save them for last.

At 28% hard (DI 2.20), this sat comfortably in the moderate band a touch gentler than the morning shift, and the most balanced of the two 2 April papers.

The four questions that decided the paper

Q1 Two linked quadratics (Hard).

SHOW SOLUTION

From α+β=3\alpha+\beta=3 and α2+2β=3\tfrac\alpha2+2\beta=-3: α=6, β=3, r=18\alpha=6,\ \beta=-3,\ r=-18. The product of the two target roots (27)(21)=567=m(-27)(21)=-567=-m, so m=567m=567. Answer: (D).

Q18 Degree-5 polynomial with a limit condition (Hard).

Extrema at ±1\pm1 and limx0fx3=5\lim_{x\to0}\tfrac{f}{x^3}=-5 fix f(x)=3x55x3f(x)=3x^5-5x^3; being odd, f(2)f(2)=2f(2)=112f(2)-f(-2)=2f(2)=112. Answer: (D).

Q23 Locus under internal tangency (Hard).

The tangency condition gives (h+3)2+k2+(h3)2+k2=12\sqrt{(h+3)^2+k^2}+\sqrt{(h-3)^2+k^2}=12 — an ellipse with foci (±3,0)(\pm3,0), a=6a=6, c=3c=3, so e=12e=\tfrac12 and 72e2=1872e^2=18. Answer: 18.

Q24 — Area between a hyperbola and a line (Hard).

Integrating the branch minus the line from x=3x=3 to 55 gives A=86ln3A=8-6\ln3, so A+6ln3=8A+6\ln3=8 and 3(A+6ln3)=243(A+6\ln3)=24. Answer: 24.
